Music and poetry are of extreme cultural and historical significance. Choose a published song or poem that demonstrates this. This can be modern or from another era. You will play the song/video or read/perform the poem in your presentation and discuss its relevance in symbolizing our concepts of self, society, history and culture. Creativity is encouraged.
Each presentation will run a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 7 minutes including the time it takes to play the song or read the poem. The song/poem must also be cited. If you choose to consult additional sources they must be credible and properly cited. Don’t forget images and videos are sources too!
in-text citations should be clearly visible on the slide. If you are recording your voice, you can indicate sources as you speak. Be sure to include a full Reference slide (just like an APA style Reference page) at the end of your presentation. Presentations will be stand-alone files. That means you will not accompany your presentation (outside of the file you submit) or need to schedule a specific time to “present”. Viewers should get your full intended experience by simply opening and viewing/playing your presentation file. Voice overs, even in PowerPoint, are encouraged but not specifically required.
I will use the star-spangled banner as my song to display cultural and historical significance. I will use PowerPoint to present the song. My presentation plans include PowerPoint slides that contain both images and words. My presentation will be in a storytelling session to make the presentation interesting. The images I plan to use will tell a story of American culture and patriotism. I will arrange the images so that a viewer will quickly tell the story without reading the words. The images will be accompanied by words that I plan on reading out as I present to engage my audience more. I also plan on infusing passion into my presentation to capture the full attention of my audience.
Symbolizing is relevant as it enables us to express complex ideas that a reader or viewer can easily comprehend. Symbolizing is also vital in giving a viewer a memorable sensory experience. Symbolism is essential as it helps establish relationships between concepts that could have otherwise remained unknown. Symbolizing also helps us entertainingly express our ideas and further helps us elaborate concepts that could be confusing even to us. Symbolizing is essential in bringing a different perspective on concepts, and it enables us to analyze concepts critically. We illustrate our concepts of history and culture to show others how we comprehend the message. Symbolizing also allows us to look at things objectively, thus assessing the situation thoroughly before giving our judgments.
For visuals, I will use pictures that tell the story of our culture and history. Each slide will have the photo of the flag to represent the lyrics ”our flag was still there.” I will use cut-outs from scenes that show the war and the triumph of the United States.
