Response Paper 1: Movie THE BUDDAH. View the movie of your choice (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, VC library) and write a response paper. Discuss three ways in which the film contributed to your understanding of Indian culture. Papers displaying any evidence of plagiarism receive a grade of zero. Previously submitted papers receive a grade of zero.
Paper Guidelines: Your papers should contain a clear introduction stating the main points you will discuss in the body of your essay, a body with three paragraphs treating your main points with supporting evidence, and a conclusion that summarizes your main points with final remarks. Papers should be about 500 words in length and must cite any source you use (film, textbooks) on a Works Cited page in MLA 8 format. You are not required to conduct research for papers but if you choose to do so, here are my guidelines on acceptable sources and citation.
Acceptable Sources and Citation: Academic sources are articles and/or books written by scholars in the field you are researching. Non-academic internet websites are not acceptable sources and if utilized, it will be reflected in your grade. Because of the variety of sources, ease of publication, lack of central control and proliferation of commercial information on the internet, it is often hard to tell if the information is reliable. Many sites contain research and information of high quality. However, unlike traditional print publications or library-based electronic resources, there is usually no process of peer review, nor is there an editor verifying the accuracy of information presented on the internet. You may not always be able to find books on your topic at a particular VC library, but you can request them from another location or through inter-library loan. Additionally, you can search online databases (ex. JSTOR, Films on Demand) through the library’s homepage for academic journal articles and visual materials. Librarians are also available to answer questions and assist you with identifying appropriate sources. You must cite all sources in MLA format.
Paper Formatting: Papers should be typed in size 12 Times New Roman font (preferred), double-spaced, with one-inch margins at top, bottom and sides. Grades are based on content, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and your ability to organize and clearly present your ideas in essay format. Please submit your papers in .doc or .docx format. Papers that are replete with grammatical errors and/or poorly structured will receive a lowered or failing grade. I strongly encourage you to proofread your work prior to submission. General Grading Rubric for Papers:
A (100-90): Paper is organized in essay format and mostly free of spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors. Student’s writing demonstrates an excellent grasp of subject matter, original thinking, and ability to express ideas clearly and in an engaging manner. Main points are well developed and detailed. Cites all sources (in text and works cited page) completely and correctly and meets required paper length.
