One of the techniques used in Lean Methodology is Rapid Cycle Tests of Change. The idea is that if you have an idea for improvement but are not sure if it will work, try it! Try it on one patient, one day, one time. That information can be used to find flaws or improvements in your idea. It saves time and money by limiting the implementation and education costs until you are relatively sure it can be implemented and will save time and/or money. By testing changes this way, you:
Minimize risks and expenditures of time and money
Make changes in a way that is less disruptive to clients and staff
Reduce resistance to change by starting on a small scale
Learn from the ideas that work, as well as from those that do not
Thus, by starting with small changes to test ideas quickly and easily, and using simple measurements to monitor the effect of changes over time, rapid-cycle testing can lead to larger improvements through successive quick cycles of change.
