In the article, Caritas Education: Theory to Practice (2020), the authors examine how the use of Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring is applied to nursing education as well as the application of theory to practice. Understanding caring is a key component to nursing, this article discusses that nurses tend to forget their own self needs and this leads to nursing burnout and compassion fatigue. The incorporation of technology into care model and practice have also scrutinized and changed the way care is provided in the 21st century. Patient satisfaction scores also play a determining factor in hospital reimbursement, the questionnaire for patients does contain nursing communication and treatment questions for the patient to review. This brings nursing theory, education, and practice full circle in that what we educate associate or bachelor degree level nurses is still important in the grand scheme of the nursing model as well as providing care. The idea that nursing care has financial impacts upon both patients, as well as hospital systems, goes to show the amount of integration that nursing has been giving into the healthcare system.
According to McEwen & Wills (2017), Adult Learning theory is the explanation of concepts in a way in which the learner has a sense of self-education and desire to learn as well as the educator’s willingness to teach and explain without talking “at” the patient (pg. 408). With an understanding of patients’ willingness to learn, nurses are to take that concept and apply the nursing theory to it when it comes to patient education. Ideally, you will a patient something once, and their desire to learn it will help them cement the concept or idea. But we all know patients are sometimes not compliant, so the educational component becomes much more apparent in their care. Explaining when why and how to take diabetic medication is far more important than “do what I say or you won’t get better”. We must use patient psychology and understanding of different educational standards and methods in order to find the best educational steps to ensure the patient consumes the information and can reproduce the information with demonstration and adherence to the medical regimen.

Brad, and Professor, I think this article on Caritas Education is extremely interesting. In all of my own studies regarding “Human Caring,” in a patient care sense, and this is the first time I have read of “incorporation into learning models with nursing education” One of the “precautionary statements in “caring’ is that as nurses we must take care fo focus a balanced part of “caring theory” on ourselves as nurses, or as Brad reminds us that if we don’t take care of our own needs, “burn-out will occur.” Nursing education can provide a similar venue for those of us who are educators. I have always felt and “learned via study after study” that those who enter nursing is not simply “happenstance,” nurses are “drawn to the profession due to their own extreme, and sometimes “obsessive need to care” about others. If we are not taught at an early part of our careers about this need to balance, we won’t last as nurses and in fact will “flee” from the profession. I did read and save this reference as an article I might use in the future and found it very insightful as well as your post.
