You don’t have to watch all of the films because that would be too much. The answers can be searched online. There is a sample paper attached as well.

For this assignment, we will be studying Asian American, African American and Caribbean American/British Cultures.
There are ten screenings for this assignment:

Read the associated chapters, articles and watch the associated films/sitcoms. I suggest starting with Asian American Culture, then on to African American Culture then finally Caribbean American/British Culture. Each assignment has a set of questions (see below) that relate to cultural stereotypes in the media. Respond to all the questions within your four page paper. The four page paper is due Monday, February 14, 2022 at 11:59pm. Be sure to comment on the films in the respective discussion boards.

Read Chapter 28.
View the films “The Namesake” and “Lion.
1. Identify any stereotypes that you may have noticed throughout the films.
2. Are these stereotypes common in media for the Indian Culture? Do you think Indian portrayal in the media has evolved? If so, how?
3. Initially, how do you think Gogol feels about his name and culture?
4. What do you think of Gogul and Maxine’s relationship?
5. What is the symbolism of Gogul shaving his head?
6. In Lion, what do you think of Saroo’s relationship with his adopted brother and parents?
7. What are your thoughts about Saroo and Guddo’s childhood in India?
Read Chapter 63.
View the films “The Last Samurai” and Rush Hour.
1. Identify any stereotypes that you may have noticed throughout the films.
2. Are these stereotypes common in media for the Asian Culture? Do you think Asian portrayal in the media has evolved? If so, how?
3. In the beginning of the film, The Last Samurai, what was the symbolism behind Katsumoto cutting off the head of General Hasegawa during the first battle against the Samurai?
4. What do you think of Katsumoto? What do you think of Captain Algren? What do you think of Captain Algren & Katsumoto’s relationship?
5. Describe the reasoning behind Captain Algren’s decision to remain with the Samurai. Do you feel he abandoned his race/culture? Do you think he was brainwashed?
6. In Rush Hour, what do you think about the relationship between Detective Carter and Inspector Lee?
7. Do you think that Detective Carter and Inspector Lee stereotype each other’s cultures?
African American Culture in Media
Read Chapter 7.
View the t.v. sitcom “The Jeffersons”
1. Identify any stereotypes that you may have noticed throughout the sitcom.
2. Are these stereotypes common in media for the African-American Culture? Do you think African-American portrayal in the media has evolved? If so, how?
3. What do you think of George Jefferson? Do you think he is a racist?
4. What kind of image does he portray in the African-American Culture? Positive or negative?
5. Based on the derogatory stereotypes that existed in the past within the media regarding African-American Culture (i.e., blackface minstrels, cartoons and buffoonery), what kind of impact do you think The Jeffersons made within the African-American Culture?

1. Identify any stereotypes that you may have noticed throughout the sitcom.
2. Are these stereotypes common in media for the African-American Culture? Do you think African-American portrayal in the media has evolved? If so, how?
3. Do you think The Cosby Show was viewed as realistic? Do you think an African-American couple with professions such as a doctor and lawyer, with 5 kids was believable for Americans?
4. Based on the derogatory stereotypes that existed in the past within the media regarding African-American Culture (i.e., blackface minstrels and buffoonery), what kind of impact do you think The Cosby Show made within the African-American Culture?
5. Do you think The Cosby Show inspired folks within the African-American Culture?

Read the article entitled “West Indians and African Americans at Work: Structural Differences and Cultural Stereotypes”.

2. Are these stereotypes common in media for the Caribbean-American Culture? Do you think Caribbean-American portrayal in the media has evolved? If so, how?
3. A common stereotype of Caribbean-Americans is their dedication to hard work, do you think the film clip of The Headleys was meant to mock Caribbean-Americans, re-enforce the stereotype or was just for laughs?
4. Do you think there’s an overall consensus that all immigrants are hard-workers? And why do you think this?
